Pavement Ants – These small ants are usually found nesting in cracks of pavement or concrete. This could be your driveway, patio, or the foundation of your home. Even if they are not nesting indoors, they often end up coming indoors to forage for food. Look for sand or dirt pushed up out of cracks outdoors, or along the basement baseboards indoors. Pavement ants are dark brown to black in colour, and are fairly small (2-4mm in length).

Pharaoh Ants – These ants usually nest in the walls of your home. They are so small they easily slip behind outlet plates and other hiding places. AVOID using sprays, as this may repel these ants and spread them around your home. Pharaoh ants are light yellow to light brown in colour and are very small (1-2mm in length). Because of their colour and size, they can have an almost transparent look.

Carpenter Ants – These large ants are a serious threat to any wooden structure. Although they do not eat wood, they do channel through it to create galleries to nest in. You will often find piles of wood shavings and dead ants (called frass) below the areas that they are nesting. They are particularly attracted to damp areas also, so they are often found in the walls of washrooms, laundry rooms, and nearby skylights. Carpenter ants are usually black, but can be red or brownish in colour also. These ants are large (5-25 mm in length).
